OpenAI announced late Wednesday that it has appointed Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart, to take on a significant new role overseeing its business and operations divisions.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, clarified in a blog post that he will remain at the helm of the organization. However, with Simo stepping in as the Chief Executive of Applications, he will be able to concentrate on other critical areas of the company, such as research, computing infrastructure, and safety protocols.

“We have evolved into a global product company, now serving hundreds of millions of users worldwide and expanding rapidly,” Altman stated. He emphasized that OpenAI has also transitioned into an ‘infrastructure company’ delivering AI tools at scale.

“Each of these areas is a colossal undertaking that could stand as its own large-scale company,” Altman wrote. “Recruiting exceptional leaders is a crucial component of executing these initiatives effectively.”

In her new position, Simo, who has been a member of OpenAI’s board, will be responsible for overseeing sales, marketing, and finance. She will report directly to Altman.

OpenAI, which gained widespread recognition with the release of its ChatGPT chatbot, has been rapidly expanding its operations while simultaneously managing multiple high-stakes projects. The San Francisco-based AI firm has steadily released advanced AI systems, including models capable of ‘reasoning.’ In March, it secured a $40 billion funding deal led by the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, bringing its valuation to $300 billion and positioning it as one of the most valuable privately held firms globally.

However, OpenAI, initially structured as a nonprofit organization, has faced challenges in redefining its corporate framework. With the rising commercial potential of AI, the company sought to distance itself from nonprofit oversight, a move that drew criticism from co-founder Elon Musk. Musk, who filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claimed the company was prioritizing profits over AI safety. The restructuring also attracted regulatory scrutiny from attorneys general in California and Delaware.

On Monday, OpenAI reversed course, announcing that it would maintain its nonprofit’s control over the organization.

Meanwhile, The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its partner Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement related to AI-generated news content. OpenAI and Microsoft have both denied the allegations.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, Simo expressed her enthusiasm for her new role, saying, “OpenAI has the potential to accelerate human progress at an unprecedented rate, and I am deeply committed to shaping these applications for the greater good.”

In a memo to Instacart employees, Simo further explained her decision, citing her longstanding passion for AI and its potential to revolutionize sectors like healthcare. “The chance to lead such a pivotal part of our collective future was an opportunity too significant to ignore,” she wrote.

Simo will continue to lead Instacart for the next few months while the company identifies a successor, a position she noted will likely be filled by a current member of Instacart’s management team. She will also remain the chairperson of Instacart’s board.

Instacart, in a statement, emphasized that Simo’s departure was not indicative of any operational changes within the company.
