E.U. Accuses Apple and Google of Unfair Practices, Risking Trump’s Ire

On Wednesday, European Union regulators intensified their efforts to compel Apple and Google to modify significant aspects of their business operations, despite potential resistance from the Trump administration regarding the regulation of American tech companies.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the 27-member bloc, announced that Apple and Google had breached a law enacted in 2022 aimed at fostering fair competition within the digital economy.

These rulings add another layer of complexity to ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and the EU, which already encompass disputes over trade, tariffs, Ukraine, and military defense.

According to the commission’s preliminary findings, Google violated the Digital Markets Act of 2022 by leveraging its dominant search engine to direct users toward its own services, thereby gaining an unfair edge over competitors. Regulators also accused Google of imposing unjust restrictions on its Google Play store, limiting the promotional offers available to app developers.

Apple, meanwhile, was ordered to facilitate better integration between its iOS mobile operating system and third-party devices such as headsets and smartwatches.

“Companies operating in the EU, regardless of where they are based, must adhere to EU regulations, including the Digital Markets Act,” stated Teresa Ribera, the European Commission’s executive vice president for competition policy. “With these rulings, we are merely enforcing the law.”

These cases highlight the EU’s continued strict oversight of major tech firms, despite strained relations with the United States. Regulators in Brussels have long scrutinized the business practices and content policies of tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and X. However, some analysts speculate that authorities might reconsider their firm stance to avoid escalating tensions with President Trump.

In February, the Trump administration warned that it might retaliate if American firms were targeted under the Digital Markets Act.

Nonetheless, the administration has not always sided with the tech industry. Just this month, the U.S. Justice Department reaffirmed its position that Google should be broken up due to antitrust violations, continuing an initiative launched during the Biden administration.

While the latest decisions do not impose immediate fines, Apple and Google could eventually face financial penalties if they fail to implement regulatory changes deemed satisfactory.

These actions against Apple and Google mark some of the first enforcement measures under the Digital Markets Act, which grants EU regulators broader authority to mandate changes in large tech companies’ products and services to promote fairer competition.

Tech companies argue that such regulations stifle innovation in Europe. Apple has already postponed the release of certain AI-powered features in the region, citing regulatory challenges.

“Today’s decisions entangle us in bureaucratic hurdles, slowing Apple’s ability to innovate for European users and compelling us to provide new features for free to companies that do not operate under the same constraints,” Apple stated.

Google, on the other hand, noted that it had already adjusted its search engine, Android operating system, and app store to align with European regulations.

“The European Commission’s latest announcement demands further modifications to Google Search, Android, and Play—changes that will disadvantage European businesses and consumers, stifle innovation, compromise security, and diminish product quality,” the company stated in a blog post.
