Apple Unveils New Lower-Priced iPhone With A.I. Features

apple launches iphone 16e with ai features for affordable price

Less than a year after debuting its artificial intelligence capabilities, Apple is bringing this feature to its most affordable iPhone model.

On Wednesday, the company launched a new iPhone priced at $599, featuring an AI system called Apple Intelligence. This new model incorporates AI functionalities such as notification summaries and writing suggestions in English, with plans to extend these features to additional languages—including Chinese, Portuguese, and a localized English version for India—in the coming months.https://svtoday.org/

The iPhone, named the iPhone 16e, does not include a home button or Touch ID, both of which have been phased out. Instead, the phone uses Face ID, a facial recognition system that has been a part of most iPhones since 2017.

This marks the first update to Apple’s budget-friendly iPhone line since 2022, replacing the iPhone SE. These affordable models have played a key role in helping Apple reach cost-conscious customers, many of whom upgrade to higher-end models on their next purchase.

Apple is unveiling the new iPhone at a crucial time, as its iPhone business has faced a downturn, with sales dropping by 2% from their peak of $205.5 billion in 2022. CEO Tim Cook has pointed out that the limited availability of Apple Intelligence, which was announced months ago but only became accessible on the newest models in English-speaking regions, contributed to the iPhone’s recent struggles. However, during a recent earnings call, Cook stated that the introduction of these AI features has boosted iPhone sales in markets where they’re available.

Despite this, surveys indicate that AI hasn’t been a major factor in customers’ decisions to buy new phones, according to Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research. “Consumers are purchasing phones for the same reasons as always: battery issues or aging devices,” he said.

Apple’s decision to raise the price of its entry-level model is also expected to benefit the company financially. The iPhone 16e costs 40% more than its predecessor, the iPhone SE, which was priced at $429. This price increase will add an extra $170 per device, helping to boost overall sales even though the total number of phones sold has remained steady at around 230 million per year.

This price hike comes after former President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all imports from China. While Apple manufactures most of its iPhones in China, Richard Kramer, partner at Arete Research, suggests that the decision to raise prices on its budget model is not directly related to the tariff. “These pricing decisions are made months in advance,” Kramer explained. “This is just the beginning of Apple raising prices across its entire product range at a time when volume growth is stagnant.”

Extending the availability of Apple Intelligence is crucial for Apple as it seeks to fend off competitors and boost its sales internationally. In China, Apple’s second-largest market, the company’s share of the smartphone market dropped by 2.4 percentage points last year to 15.5%, as rivals like Huawei gained market share, according to Counterpoint Research.

In India, one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets, the iPhone 15 was the best-selling smartphone in the last quarter of 2024, helping Apple increase its market share by 2 percentage points to 11%, Counterpoint reported.

The iPhone 16e also marks the debut of Apple’s custom-designed modem chip, the C1. This chip provides 5G connectivity and replaces the Qualcomm chips used in previous models. Apple has been developing the C1 chip since 2019, following a legal settlement with Qualcomm over licensing fees and its acquisition of Intel’s modem business.

Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, noted that while the new modem chip doesn’t offer all the features of Qualcomm’s offerings, it allows Apple to test the technology before integrating it into future iPhones. Over time, this custom chip is expected to improve battery life and extend wireless connectivity to other Apple products. “Could this chip eventually make its way into an iPad or a Mac? How far can they push this?” Bajarin asked.

Apple introduced the iPhone 16e with less fanfare than usual. Instead of holding a live event, the company released a 13-minute video on its website with Tim Cook describing the new phone. In contrast, when the iPhone SE was launched in 2022, Apple hosted a one-hour event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.
