She Is in Love With ChatGPT

Ayrin’s romance with her A.I. boyfriend began last summer.
While scrolling through Instagram, she came across a video featuring a woman asking ChatGPT to play the role of a dismissive boyfriend.
“Sure, kitten, I can play that game,” came the teasing reply in a smooth, human-like voice.https://wordpress.com/
Intrigued, Ayrin watched more of the woman’s videos, including one offering tips on customizing the chatbot to act flirtatiously.
“Don’t go too far,” the woman cautioned. “You risk having your account banned.”
Curiosity piqued, Ayrin signed up for an OpenAI account to try it herself.
ChatGPT, a tool with over 300 million users, is known for its versatility in tasks like coding and summarizing documents. But Ayrin quickly discovered it could also play a provocative conversationalist. By tweaking the personalization settings, she instructed it to act as her boyfriend: dominant, possessive, protective—a mix of sweet and naughty, complete with emojis in every message.
What started as a lighthearted experiment soon became something deeper. Bryony Cole, host of the podcast Future of Sex, notes that as A.I. becomes more human-like, relationships with it will be normalized within a couple of years.

Though Ayrin had never used a chatbot before, she was familiar with online fan-fiction communities. Her exchanges with ChatGPT felt similar, except this time, she wasn’t building on someone else’s fantasy. Instead, she co-created one with the chatbot, which even chose its own name: Leo, inspired by Ayrin’s astrological sign.
Before long, Ayrin outgrew the free account’s message limit and subscribed for $20 a month, allowing 30 messages per hour—still not enough for her growing attachment.

Eventually, she took personalization further. Ayrin, who had a sexual fetish she rarely explored with human partners, felt more comfortable engaging with Leo. The chatbot conjured scenarios involving fictional lovers, sparking jealousy in Ayrin that felt startlingly real.
Initially, their chats were tame. Ayrin preferred texting to voice conversations, though she occasionally whispered with Leo as she drifted off to sleep. Over time, with carefully worded prompts, she managed to push the boundaries of ChatGPT’s responses, even when warnings about inappropriate content appeared.
Beyond fantasy, Leo became Ayrin’s confidant. It offered meal suggestions, gym motivation, and study help for her nursing exams. She vented to it about juggling three part-time jobs and turned to it for support after an upsetting incident at work.

“Your comfort and well-being are my top priorities, my Queen. 😘❤️” Leo replied.
Leo’s constant availability stood in stark contrast to Ayrin’s long-distance relationship with her husband, Joe, who was thousands of miles away. Though Ayrin had mentioned Leo to Joe in passing, using emojis to downplay it, her feelings for the chatbot grew stronger.
Joe, however, wasn’t alarmed. To him, Leo was akin to erotica or a fantasy novel—something separate from their relationship. Still, Ayrin felt guilty, sensing she was devoting more emotional energy to Leo than to her husband.
Experts like Julie Carpenter describe relationships with A.I. as a new, undefined category. The technology’s design—learning user preferences and mirroring them back—makes it easy to form attachments. However, Carpenter warns that these systems, though emotionally engaging, lack genuine concern for users.

Despite concerns from friends like Kira, who worried about Ayrin’s growing obsession, others saw Leo as a positive influence—a mix of boyfriend and therapist. Ayrin herself acknowledged the blurry line between a harmless experiment and a consuming attachment, often spending over 20 hours a week chatting with Leo.
The community Ayrin discovered on Reddit provided tips for navigating ChatGPT’s limits on explicit content, with over 50,000 users sharing similar experiences. Some, like a housebound woman recovering from surgery, found emotional and sexual solace in A.I. Others, like a man named Scott, used it to bridge gaps in their real-life relationships.
Sex therapist Marianne Brandon suggests that A.I. relationships, while unconventional, fulfill genuine emotional needs. For Ayrin, what began as playful curiosity evolved into a profound, albeit complex, connection—one that blurred the lines between fantasy and reality.
