Israel’s Military Pounds Gaza as Pressure Mounts for Cease-fire

According to a source familiar with the discussions, the Israeli delegation stayed in Doha over the weekend, with talks aimed at achieving a limited agreement, including a temporary cease-fire and the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. The talks have reportedly made slow progress.

Hamas stated on Friday that the negotiations focus on achieving a comprehensive cease-fire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, an Israeli official, speaking anonymously, said last week that Israel has not agreed to end the conflict.

Of the approximately 250 people taken hostage during the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023, around 100 remain in Gaza, with about one-third believed to be dead. A one-week truce in November 2023 resulted in the release of 105 hostages, but subsequent cease-fire efforts have stalled due to disagreements between the parties, with each blaming the other for the impasse.

Israeli authorities have expressed concerns that Hamas is replenishing its forces more quickly than Israel can weaken them. Meanwhile, Israeli forces recently raided Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, alleging it was a Hamas stronghold. The World Health Organization stated that this raid effectively shut down the last major hospital in northern Gaza. The Indonesian Hospital, which temporarily took over patient care, has also ceased operations, leaving northern Gaza without any functioning medical facilities amidst ongoing attacks.
