Elon Musk’s xAI Raises $6 Billion in New Funding

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, announced on Monday that it had secured $6 billion in funding, significantly boosting its position in the competitive AI landscape alongside rivals like OpenAI.
According to the company’s website, the capital will be used to expand its infrastructure and accelerate ongoing research and development efforts. Prominent investors including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Sequoia Capital participated in the funding round.https://wordpress.com/
“This funding is crucial for scaling our computational needs,” Musk stated in a post on X.
This investment could push xAI’s valuation to between $35 billion and $40 billion, a substantial increase from its previous valuation of $24 billion earlier this year, as reported by The New York Times.
Neither Musk nor xAI responded to immediate requests for comment.
Musk is striving to catch up in the AI race. Though he leads several major companies, including Tesla, X, and SpaceX, he launched xAI only last year, after a wave of AI innovations had already produced tools capable of generating text, images, and even videos.
He quickly built what he claims is the world’s largest supercomputer, located in Memphis, to power Grok, xAI’s chatbot. Grok is available exclusively to subscribers on X.
Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI but left in 2018 following disagreements with other key figures, including CEO Sam Altman. Musk has since filed a lawsuit to prevent OpenAI from converting into a for-profit entity, alleging that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman violated the company’s founding principles by prioritizing commercial interests over public welfare. OpenAI maintains that Musk’s legal action is a tactic to hinder the company as he develops a competing platform.
In addition, The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement related to news content used by their AI systems, which both companies deny.
While Musk has expressed concerns that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity, he argues that he is uniquely positioned to develop it in a safer manner.
To accelerate xAI’s growth, Musk has trained its AI models using data from X. The same investors who backed his 2022 acquisition of X, including Andreessen Horowitz and the Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal’s Kingdom Holding, have also contributed to the funding of xAI. To date, the startup has raised over $12 billion.
