San Francisco, November 2024 — For Pengchang Cheng, golf is not just a sport but a profound philosophical journey. With over a decade of dedication and passion, he has achieved remarkable success on the course while extending the spirit of golf to philanthropic endeavors, becoming a role model for combining athleticism with social responsibility.

Cheng discovered golf at the age of ten and was immediately captivated by its uniqueness. “Golf is a silent competition with oneself; every effort is not about defeating others but about constantly surpassing one’s own limits,” he shares. Over the past decade, he has devoted more than 15 hours a week to rigorous training, honing every detail from his swing to his putt with precision.

“Golf taught me to remain calm and rational, whether in victory or defeat,” Cheng says. “It’s a sport that instills a peaceful mindset, where every swing represents both a focus on the goal and a challenge to oneself.”

Driving Philanthropy Through Golf

Golf has brought Cheng personal growth and success, but it has also become a vital tool for driving philanthropic efforts. In 2022, as team captain, Cheng organized a golf fundraising event to support his high school’s plans for a new teaching building. He led the team in designing the event, recruiting golf enthusiasts and business professionals to participate, and personally creating promotional materials and distributing flyers. The event successfully raised $1,750, contributing significantly to the school’s development.

“This event made me realize that golf is not just a sport but a powerful way to connect people and drive social change,” Cheng remarks. “The skills I developed in teamwork and resource coordination were immensely enhanced through this experience.”

Beyond this, Cheng has participated in various community initiatives through golf. At Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church, he contributed part of the funds raised from his golf events to support low-income families. He firmly believes that golf, as a sport emphasizing integrity and discipline, can bring more positive energy to philanthropy.

Golf as a Bridge Between Life and Service

For Cheng, golf is more than just a passion; it is a bridge connecting life’s philosophies with social responsibility. “Golf is like a microcosm of life,” he explains. “A round of golf has 18 holes, and each hole represents a life goal—health, wealth, relationships… Every swing is a pursuit of those goals and a breakthrough of self-limitation.”

Through golf, Cheng has not only experienced the growth that comes with the sport, but has also turned this passion into a profound impact on his community. He realized that the spiritual core of golf, as a sport that emphasizes integrity, self-discipline and focus, is a natural fit with the values of philanthropy.

The Future of Golf and Philanthropy

Looking ahead, Cheng hopes to further integrate the competitive spirit of golf with philanthropic ideals, using the sport to create meaningful change for those in need. He plans to expand golf charity initiatives globally, designing creative fundraising models to promote educational equity and support underserved communities.
