A Young Leader with a Global Vision

Zhang’s journey into philanthropy began at an early age. Growing up in a family that valued global awareness and compassion, he was exposed to diverse cultures and social issues. As a student at an international school in Shenzhen, Zhang developed a keen understanding of the world’s inequalities, particularly in education and living conditions. He reflects, “From a young age, I noticed the stark differences in opportunities that people from various regions experience. I wanted to find ways to bridge those gaps and create a more equitable world.”

This realization became the foundation of his mission to take action. Zhang’s curiosity and determination led him to establish Global Youth for Change, a non-profit aimed at empowering young people worldwide to engage in social good. The organization’s primary focus areas—education, environmental sustainability, and supporting underserved communities—highlight Zhang’s commitment to making a tangible impact. “Young people have an incredible power to drive social change,” Zhang says. “I want to bring that potential to the forefront and encourage others to step up and make a difference.”

From Business Consulting to Charity: A Strategic Approach

Zhang’s experience is not just limited to charity work. During his high school years, he secured a unique internship opportunity at McKinsey & Company, where he served as a business consulting assistant. The position exposed him to high-level strategy development, problem-solving, and data analysis, skills typically reserved for more seasoned professionals. “Working at McKinsey allowed me to approach complex issues from a strategic standpoint,” Zhang notes. “It taught me that successful social impact initiatives need the same kind of rigor, analysis, and structure as any business strategy.”

This internship was a turning point for Zhang, influencing his view on how charitable projects should be run. He realized that simply having a good heart was not enough; effective and sustainable change requires a blend of passion and strong operational management. “McKinsey taught me the importance of building strategic foundations for any long-term project. Charity should not just be about aid—it should be about developing solutions that are scalable and efficient.”

Social Psychology Meets Philanthropy

Another significant experience in Zhang’s journey was his internship at Dartmouth College, where he worked as a research assistant in social psychology. This opportunity allowed him to dive into the science behind human behavior, group dynamics, and social cognition. He applied the knowledge gained from his research to his work in public welfare, focusing on how behavioral patterns could be changed through education and awareness campaigns.

“Social psychology gave me a new perspective on public welfare,” Zhang explains. “It’s not enough to simply provide resources to communities. Often, lasting change comes when people are empowered to think and act differently. That’s why my approach to charity increasingly revolves around education and shifting mindsets.”

A Global Approach: UNHCR and Stanford PACS Volunteer Work

Zhang has also been deeply involved in humanitarian work through his role as a volunteer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In this capacity, he supported efforts to aid refugees and displaced individuals globally, contributing to advocacy efforts, translating key documents, and working on data-driven projects aimed at improving refugee support services.

“This role taught me about the complexity of humanitarian issues and the need for tailored solutions for each unique context,” Zhang reflects. “Resources are important, but finding ways to work within the cultural and social fabric of each community is critical for creating meaningful change.”

Additionally, Zhang expanded his knowledge of cross-sector collaboration through his volunteer experience at Stanford University’s Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS). At PACS, Zhang participated in multi-disciplinary research projects aimed at addressing global challenges through innovation and collaboration between governments, businesses, and non-profits. He gained valuable insights into how different sectors can work together to tackle large-scale problems more effectively.

“PACS showed me that global challenges require a collaborative approach. It’s not just about one organization or one leader—social innovation happens when multiple stakeholders come together,” Zhang says.

Global Youth for Change: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

Zhang’s journey has culminated in the success of Global Youth for Change, which has already made significant strides in countries around the world. The organization’s projects focus on improving education access, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting marginalized communities. Beyond this, Zhang is also passionate about developing young leaders who are equipped to take on global challenges.

“We aim to empower communities, especially in areas like education and the environment. Through the involvement of youth, we’re not only solving problems now but also building a foundation for sustainable social change,” Zhang explains. His organization has already impacted many lives, improving the quality of life for vulnerable groups while cultivating a new generation of socially-conscious leaders.

Honored with the ICSO Award: A Global Acknowledgment

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to global public welfare, Zhang was honored with the 2024 ICSO International Public Welfare Ambassador title, a significant global accolade. For Zhang, this award represents not just a personal achievement but a celebration of the collective efforts of everyone involved in Global Youth for Change.

“I’m truly honored to receive this recognition,” Zhang says. “But it’s really a testament to the hard work and dedication of all the volunteers and supporters who have helped make our initiatives successful. This is just the beginning of our journey, and I’m excited to continue expanding our efforts.”

Looking Ahead: A Lifelong Commitment to Public Welfare

Looking to the future, Zhang plans to further expand Global Youth for Change’s reach, establishing more partnerships and developing innovative project models to create even greater impact. His ultimate goal is to foster a culture where young people worldwide realize their potential to effect change on a global scale.

“Public welfare is a lifelong journey. It’s something that requires continuous innovation, collaboration, and commitment. Through our organization, I hope to empower more young people to recognize their strength and create lasting, positive change in the world.”

Zhang Jingning’s story is a testament to the power of youth and the incredible impact that one person can have on the world. His passion, strategic thinking, and leadership have positioned him as a rising force in the world of philanthropy, offering hope and inspiration to young leaders everywhere. As Zhang himself says, “Change starts with individual action, and I hope to inspire others to take that first step alongside me.”
