Jonathan Groff, who earned his first Tony Award in June for his role in the successful revival of Merrily We Roll Along, is set to make his return to Broadway next spring. He will take on the role of Bobby Darin in a biomusical he has been working on for several years.

The production, titled Just in Time, will start preview performances on March 28 and officially open on April 23 at Circle in the Square Theater in Midtown Manhattan. The theater’s setup, which allows for a near in-the-round experience, will be transformed into an immersive nightclub-like atmosphere. The staging will feature a cast of 16, a live onstage big band, two stages, and some cabaret-style seating.

The show originally premiered in 2018 at the 92nd Street Y as a five-performance concert called The Bobby Darin Story and has since undergone several workshop developments. Groff, in an interview, admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect during the initial run but said, “It energized me.”

“There’s a kind of electric magic in performing his songs live,” said Groff, 39, who has also been nominated for a Tony Award for his performances in Hamilton (as King George III) and Spring Awakening (his breakout role). Alongside his Broadway career, Groff has appeared extensively on TV in shows like Glee, Looking, and Mindhunter, and he gained international fame voicing Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen franchise.

Bobby Darin, a singer-songwriter whose pop music career flourished in the 1950s and 1960s, is famous for hits like “Splish Splash,” “Mack the Knife,” and “Beyond the Sea.” He struggled with a heart condition and passed away at the age of 37.

“Darin’s life is compelling because he lived like he was on borrowed time,” said Alex Timbers, the musical’s director, who previously won a Tony Award for directing Moulin Rouge! “His life was lived in the fast lane. He discovered that the woman he believed was his sister was actually his mother, explored folk and pop music, and ultimately embraced his identity as a nightclub performer.”

The musical’s script was written by Tony winner Warren Leight (Side Man) and Isaac Oliver, with choreography by Shannon Lewis. The concept for the show came from Ted Chapin, who initially wrote the script and produced the concert at the Y as part of its long-running Lyrics & Lyricists series.

“We all became invested in telling Darin’s life story within the setting of a nightclub,” Groff explained. “We’re experimenting with the biomusical genre, trying to bring a fresh perspective not just to his story but to the form itself.”
