OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, an artificial-intelligence presentation startup whose team is now working on ChatGPT, adding specialized slide-generation talent as the San Francisco AI company expands further into mainstream workplace software.

NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry disclosed the move in a note published on the startup’s website. He described the company’s product as a system capable of turning prompts, notes, documents or research into polished presentations that remained editable. Beshry said the team would continue pursuing its broader goal of making it easier for people to create and communicate ideas through AI products at OpenAI.

The companies did not disclose the acquisition price, the number of employees joining OpenAI or other transaction terms. Beshry indicated separately that the announcement came several months after the deal itself, which took place earlier in 2026. That timing makes the August disclosure a confirmation of an already completed transaction rather than the beginning of a pending acquisition process.

TechCrunch reported the acquisition on Aug. 8, placing the public announcement within a broader wave of investment in AI tools that perform complete knowledge-work tasks. NextSlide’s website now centers on the announcement that the company is joining OpenAI, leaving unanswered whether its standalone presentation service will continue operating, be discontinued or eventually reappear as a feature inside ChatGPT.

The destination of the NextSlide team is more revealing than the limited financial information. By assigning the group to ChatGPT, OpenAI is signaling that presentation creation belongs within its core consumer and enterprise product rather than in an unrelated experimental unit. Slide decks are a routine output for executives, consultants, sales teams, educators, researchers and startup founders, making the category a potentially important point of entry into paid workplace use.

Presentation software also presents a more complicated technical challenge than producing a block of prose. A useful deck must impose hierarchy on information, determine which claims deserve emphasis, distribute content across slides and coordinate text with charts, images and layouts. It must also preserve an editable structure so users can revise numbers, apply company branding or reorder the argument without rebuilding the file.

NextSlide’s stated focus on polished, editable output therefore aligns with OpenAI’s effort to move ChatGPT from a question-and-answer interface toward a system that produces finished materials. In workplace settings, that means handling the transition from source files and instructions to a usable deliverable, not merely proposing an outline that an employee must transfer into another application.

OpenAI has already established a presence in this market. Its official support documentation describes ChatGPT for PowerPoint as an AI experience operating through a sidebar inside Microsoft’s presentation application. The tool can create a first draft from source material, revise existing slides, assess a deck’s structure and tailor content for a particular audience while preserving editable slide elements.

The PowerPoint integration can be used for tasks such as preparing board updates, turning a memo into slides, adding a risk section or tightening a presentation for executives. OpenAI cautions that generated material can be incomplete or incorrect and that advanced formatting, chart and slide-management capabilities may remain limited. Users are advised to review important claims, figures and edits before distributing a presentation.

Those limitations help explain the strategic value of acquiring a team devoted specifically to presentations. Large language models can summarize material and draft headings, but creating a coherent deck requires additional product design, file-format handling and visual reasoning. NextSlide’s experience may help OpenAI close the gap between a plausible first draft and a presentation that employees can confidently revise and use.

OpenAI has not announced which NextSlide features, if any, will be incorporated into ChatGPT. It has also not provided a release schedule or said whether future capabilities will appear in the main ChatGPT interface, the PowerPoint add-in or other workplace products. Any direct connection between the acquisition and a particular forthcoming feature therefore remains unconfirmed.

The deal nevertheless sharpens the competitive landscape around AI productivity software. Microsoft has built its Copilot services around the Office applications used by many businesses, while Google can connect its Gemini models with Workspace products such as Docs and Slides. Independent services have also competed by offering prompt-based presentation design without requiring users to begin inside a traditional office suite.

OpenAI approaches the market from a different starting point: a widely used AI assistant that is steadily gaining the ability to work with more file types and applications. Its workplace tools can create or edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations from instructions, source materials and templates, depending on the user’s plan, settings and connected services. Acquiring NextSlide adds presentation-specific expertise to that broader strategy.

The expansion also creates a delicate competitive overlap with Microsoft. Microsoft is a major OpenAI partner and PowerPoint remains one of the dominant presentation products. At the same time, OpenAI’s own tools increasingly perform functions associated with office software. The companies can continue to benefit from integration—the ChatGPT PowerPoint add-in is an example—while also competing over which interface becomes the primary place where users begin and manage their work.

For enterprise customers, deeper presentation automation will carry operational and governance concerns alongside potential productivity gains. Slide decks frequently contain confidential forecasts, customer information, strategic plans and unreleased financial results. Organizations evaluating AI presentation tools will need to consider access permissions, data retention, audit coverage and the handling of information drawn from connected systems.

Accuracy is another central issue because a polished design can make unsupported information appear authoritative. An AI system may misread a spreadsheet, compress away an important qualification or present an inference as a settled conclusion. Human review remains especially important for investor materials, regulatory presentations, scientific findings and executive decisions. Editable output is valuable partly because it lets users inspect and correct the underlying work before publication.

Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, a company that developed smart shopping carts and cashierless retail technology. Instacart acquired Caper AI in 2021. His move to OpenAI with the NextSlide team gives the ChatGPT organization experience spanning applied AI products, visual interfaces and the process of converting emerging technology into tools for everyday users.

For now, the acquisition is best understood as a targeted addition of technology and talent rather than the launch of a new OpenAI service. The terms remain private, and substantial questions about NextSlide’s product and integration plan are unresolved. What is clear is that OpenAI views presentation creation as part of ChatGPT’s future—and as another arena in which AI assistants will compete to become the central software layer for American knowledge workers.
