Australian breaker Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, who gained viral attention for her surprising performance at the Paris Olympics, announced her plans to step away from competitive breaking on Wednesday during an interview with a Sydney radio station.
The 37-year-old became widely mocked after her unique Olympic routine featured an unusual move resembling a kangaroo hop, sparking a flood of internet memes and clips. Gunn did not win any of her three preliminary rounds at the 2024 Games, where breaking made its Olympic debut.
Originally, Gunn intended to continue competing, but she changed her mind due to what she described as “upsetting” criticism.
“I’m still breaking, but not in competitions,” she shared on 2DayFM’s “The Jimmy & Nath Show.” “I don’t see myself battling again… I was committed to it, but now it just feels too challenging to go into another competition.”
She noted that while she still dances, it’s more for fun at home with her partner.
Gunn previously defended her Olympic qualification, responding to online theories about her path to the Games, including a Change.org petition accusing her of manipulating the process. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) called for the petition’s removal, with AOC CEO Matt Carroll condemning it as “disgraceful” and misleading.
Gunn secured her Olympic spot by winning the QMS Oceania Championships in Sydney, a qualifying event with 15 competitors. Reflecting on her Olympics experience, she admitted, “I knew the odds were against me.”

“The conspiracy theories were completely out of control,” Gunn explained. “It was really hard because I felt like I had no power over how people viewed me, my story, or my partner. That was tough for a lot of reasons.”
Breaking is not currently scheduled for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles or the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia. Looking forward, Gunn suggests her Paris performance may be her last on the official stage. Now a university lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, she’s focused on “projects happening in the background.”
“It’s all about spreading positivity, encouraging people to dance, be creative, and express their true selves, whatever that looks like,” she added.
