With two weeks remaining in the 2026 Major League Baseball regular season, the first postseason tickets have been punched, but much of the bracket remains unsettled. The Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers are the first teams to clinch playoff berths, leaving division titles, Wild Card positions, first-round byes and home-field advantages to be determined across a compressed final stretch.

The American League carries most of the uncertainty. Tampa Bay enters the week at 90-59 with a four-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East. The Rays have already secured their postseason place, but the division is not mathematically finished. New York remains close enough to keep pressure on Tampa Bay, and the clubs are scheduled for a four-game series at Yankee Stadium during the final week of the regular season.

For the Yankees, the calculation is two-sided. New York is still pursuing the division title while also trying to maintain its advantage over Boston for the top Wild Card position. The Yankees enter Monday at 86-63, while the Red Sox are 82-68. Finishing as the No. 4 seed instead of No. 5 would mean hosting every game of the best-of-three Wild Card Series, making the gap between New York and Boston meaningful even if both clubs remain comfortably positioned to qualify.

The AL Central is considerably less comfortable. The Chicago White Sox enter Monday at 76-73, just a half-game ahead of the 76-74 Cleveland Guardians. Their three-game series in Cleveland from Sept. 14-16 could reshape both the division race and the Wild Card picture at the same time.

Chicago holds a 6-4 advantage in the season series entering those games. That creates a particularly sharp tiebreaker scenario: one White Sox victory would guarantee Chicago the head-to-head advantage, while Cleveland needs to sweep all three games to take the season series. Because MLB settles ties mathematically instead of scheduling a Game 163, that result could become decisive if the teams finish with identical records.

Cleveland has another concern. The Guardians currently occupy the third and final AL Wild Card position, only one game ahead of Toronto. The Blue Jays are 75-75 and already own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland. That means the Guardians cannot safely treat a tie with Toronto as enough. Texas is also in the Wild Card discussion and owns tiebreakers over both Cleveland and Toronto, giving the Rangers another potential route into October even if they fall short in their division.

The AL West is nearly as tight. Houston enters the week at 75-75 after being swept by Tampa Bay, while Texas sits one game behind at 74-76. The Astros nevertheless possess an important advantage: they have secured the season-series tiebreaker over the Rangers. In practical terms, Texas may need to finish outright ahead of Houston rather than merely draw even.

The White Sox-Astros comparison also matters beyond their respective divisions. The two highest-seeded division winners in each league receive automatic passage to the Division Series. Entering the week, Chicago is 1 1/2 games ahead of Houston in the race involving the current AL Central and AL West leaders for the second first-round bye. A change atop either division could alter that race immediately.

The National League has fewer unsettled division races but remains competitive in seeding. Milwaukee enters Monday at 93-57, the best record in baseball, while the Dodgers are 90-59 and Atlanta is 88-62. The Brewers have already clinched a postseason spot and are in strong position for one of the league’s two Wild Card-round byes.

The Dodgers and Braves are separated by 2 1/2 games for the other bye. Atlanta already owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against Los Angeles, giving the Braves additional leverage if they can close the gap. That race is important because finishing third among NL division winners would require playing a best-of-three Wild Card Series despite a record that could rank among the best in the majors.

Atlanta begins a three-game series at Wrigley Field on Monday against a Cubs team with its own postseason priorities. Chicago and Philadelphia both enter the week at 83-67, but the Cubs hold the tiebreaker after dominating their head-to-head season series. Chicago also owns established tiebreaker advantages over San Diego and Arizona, potentially giving the Cubs considerable protection if the Wild Card race produces matching records.

San Diego has created breathing room at the bottom of the NL playoff field with a seven-game winning streak. The Padres enter Monday at 81-68, 2 1/2 games ahead of the 79-71 Diamondbacks for the third Wild Card position. Their surge followed a 6-0 week and transformed a race that had been nearly even only days earlier.

Arizona, however, still has a direct opportunity to change the standings. The Diamondbacks and Padres close the regular season against each other in San Diego from Sept. 25-27. They have split their first 10 meetings, meaning that final three-game series will also decide the head-to-head tiebreaker. If the clubs remain close entering the final weekend, those games could function as a de facto playoff series.

Philadelphia is positioned between the Cubs and Padres in the Wild Card hierarchy but cannot ignore seeding. The Phillies own the tiebreaker against San Diego but lose the head-to-head comparison with Chicago. A tie with the Cubs therefore would leave Philadelphia behind Chicago for hosting priority, while a slide toward San Diego could threaten a favorable Wild Card matchup.

The remaining schedule gives the AL particularly strong head-to-head opportunities. Chicago and Cleveland meet immediately, Toronto visits Texas from Sept. 18-20, and Tampa Bay and New York still have their four-game confrontation in the final week. Those series reduce the need for teams to rely entirely on outside help because contenders can take games directly from the clubs they are chasing.

The postseason begins Sept. 29 with four best-of-three Wild Card Series. The two highest-seeded division winners in each league receive byes, while the No. 3 division winner hosts the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed hosts No. 5. Every Wild Card game is played at the higher seed’s ballpark. With qualification, byes and hosting rights all still unsettled, the final two weeks carry consequences well beyond the simple distinction between making the playoffs and missing them.
