Texas moved into the final stretch of the preseason Monday as the No. 5 team in the Associated Press Top 25, reinforcing a central argument of the 2026 SEC race: The Longhorns may be the conference’s most complete challenger even if Georgia remains the more established choice. The Bulldogs opened at No. 3 and were selected by SEC media to win a third consecutive league championship, but Texas has the quarterback experience, perimeter talent and defensive front to overturn that forecast.

Our prediction is that Texas goes 7-2 in SEC play, earns a place in the Dec. 5 championship game in Atlanta and beats Georgia for the program’s first SEC title. That projection allows for the volatility created by a schedule featuring seven teams in the preseason AP rankings. It also reflects the league’s move from eight to nine conference games, which makes an unbeaten SEC record less realistic and increases the value of depth, health and week-to-week consistency.

The argument begins with Arch Manning, but it cannot end there. Manning entered 2025 carrying extraordinary expectations in his first full season as the starter. Texas ultimately finished 9-3 in the regular season and missed the playoff, a result that illustrated the danger of treating even a highly gifted quarterback as a complete offensive plan. The more relevant question for 2026 is whether Manning can operate a balanced unit without having to rescue it repeatedly.

The available evidence suggests he can. Manning is now a returning starter rather than a projection, and his surrounding cast has been strengthened. Transfer receiver Cam Coleman joined Ryan Wingo to give Texas two high-ceiling outside targets. Ryan Niblett offers value as a receiver, runner and return specialist. Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown add options in a backfield that needs to produce reliably enough to keep the offense out of predictable passing situations.

Texas’ offensive line may be the most important reason to favor the Longhorns over the field. Trevor Goosby was a first-team preseason All-SEC selection, while Brandon Baker received third-team recognition. The group enters the season with substantially more collective experience than the unit that struggled to generate consistent movement in key 2025 losses. Against Georgia, Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M, the ability to convert short-yardage opportunities and protect Manning without excessive help will matter more than highlight throws.

Sarkisian’s offense is at its best when formations, motion and personnel disguise the intended point of attack. A deeper group of runners and receivers should let Texas create those conflicts without making Manning the entire engine. Coleman’s size and range can influence coverage even when he is not targeted, while Wingo’s speed can punish defenses that crowd the box. If the running game reaches merely above-average SEC efficiency, Texas should be harder to compress in the red zone and more capable of controlling games late.

The defense supplies an equally persuasive part of the championship case. Colin Simmons was voted first-team preseason All-SEC after emerging as one of the league’s premier edge defenders. Rasheem Biles, another first-team selection, strengthens the second level, while Jelani McDonald provides experience in the secondary. The roster also includes enough young talent to build a productive rotation rather than asking a small group of stars to absorb every high-leverage snap.

That rotation will be essential under defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. His task is not to reinvent a unit stocked with blue-chip players but to make it more disruptive and dependable against the varied offenses on Texas’ schedule. The Longhorns must handle power running teams, mobile quarterbacks and opponents willing to spread the field. Simmons gives Texas a pass rusher who can change protections by himself, allowing the defense to create pressure without committing extra defenders on every passing down.

Georgia remains the clearest obstacle. The Bulldogs received 88 championship votes in the SEC preseason media poll, compared with 57 for Texas, and edged the Longhorns in overall points, 2,519 to 2,449. Kirby Smart’s program has also won the conference in consecutive seasons, a level of proof Texas does not possess. Georgia therefore deserves to be treated as the benchmark, not dismissed because the Longhorns may have a more dynamic offensive ceiling.

The separation between the teams is narrow enough that quarterback play and explosive passes could decide a potential rematch in Atlanta. Georgia’s continuity, line play and championship experience make it less likely to lose through self-inflicted errors. Texas’ advantage is that its best version may place greater stress on every area of a defense. Manning can attack vertically, extend plays and run when coverage opens space, while the expanded group of skill players should reduce the number of situations in which an opponent can anticipate Sarkisian’s call.

Ole Miss, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma form the next tier of the race. Ole Miss was third in the SEC media poll and placed quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy on the preseason first-team offense. Texas A&M begins at No. 8 in the AP poll and hosts the Longhorns in the regular-season finale, giving the Aggies an opportunity to alter both the conference standings and playoff picture. LSU starts in the AP top 10, while Alabama and Oklahoma remain talented enough to punish an uneven contender.

The schedule is the strongest argument against picking Texas. A nonconference meeting with No. 1 Ohio State creates an early national test without directly affecting the SEC standings. Within the league, Texas must navigate opponents that can challenge its rebuilt offensive line and test a secondary working within a new defensive structure. The nine-game format also reduces recovery time: a physical victory can carry consequences into the following week even when the next opponent appears less imposing.

Because of that difficulty, Texas does not need perfection to win the conference. It needs to avoid the damaging offensive stretches that defined its defeats last season. A 7-2 league record should keep the Longhorns firmly in the championship race, although tiebreakers could become critical in a crowded standings table. Their ability to beat direct contenders will matter more than accumulating an impressive overall ranking.

The AP poll adds context but not certainty. The SEC placed nine teams in the preseason Top 25, more than any other conference, yet the Big Ten occupies the top two positions with Ohio State and Oregon. For Texas, that landscape creates two connected objectives: win enough marquee games to remain secure in the playoff field and reach Atlanta with an opportunity to claim the conference’s automatic leverage in the national championship race.

This is not a prediction that Texas will cruise. It is a judgment that the Longhorns are better constructed to survive their difficult moments than they were a year ago. Manning has experience, the offense has more answers around him, and the defense possesses impact players at all three levels. Georgia offers the stronger recent résumé, but Texas enters 2026 with the roster balance and offensive upside to finish the job it could not complete in its first SEC Championship appearance.
