Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva die in road accident
In a devastating incident that has shocked the football world, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, have tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain.
Authorities in the province of Zamora, located in the northwestern part of the country, confirmed that the crash occurred early Thursday morning around 12:30 a.m. local time. The vehicle — a Lamborghini occupied by the two brothers — veered off the A-52 highway, a major road that links Madrid to the Galicia region bordering Portugal. Upon impact, the car caught fire. It has not yet been determined who was behind the wheel at the time of the incident.
Jota had been en route to the port city of Santander to catch a ferry bound for the United Kingdom, as he was due to report back to Liverpool for pre-season preparations. Due to a recent minor surgical procedure, he had been advised against flying, prompting his decision to travel by road.
Just weeks prior, Jota had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso in a ceremony held in his hometown of Porto, roughly 300 kilometers west of Zamora. The couple had three children together.
A wake in Porto is scheduled for Friday, followed by a funeral service on Saturday.
Liverpool FC and Football Community React with Grief
Liverpool Football Club responded to the news with a heartfelt statement expressing their sorrow over the loss of one of their players. “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the statement began.
The club’s sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group — the club’s owners — issued a joint message underscoring the collective grief shared by the Liverpool family.
“There are no words that can ease the pain brought on by this unspeakable tragedy,” their message read. “We are all deeply saddened. At this time, our priority is to support Diogo’s family — his wife Rute, their three children, and the wider family — who are experiencing an unimaginable loss. We also grieve the loss of Andre Silva, Diogo’s brother, and we honor both lives equally.”
The statement emphasized the need to respect the privacy of the grieving family and acknowledged the emotional toll the loss has had on everyone connected to the club — from teammates and staff to fans and the broader football world.
“Diogo was not only an exceptional player but also a cherished friend and colleague,” the statement continued. “His contribution to this club, both on and off the field, was immense. Over the coming days, we will pay tribute to our number 20 in a manner befitting his legacy — with respect, love, and unity.”
Penafiel and Portuguese Football in Mourning
Penafiel, the Portuguese second-division club for which Andre Silva played, also released a statement mourning the tragic deaths. “Futebol Clube Penafiel extends its heartfelt condolences for the untimely deaths of Andre Silva and Diogo Jota, who were victims of a road accident,” the statement read. “The loss of two young individuals, each closely tied to the game of football, is profoundly painful.”
The club announced that official mourning would be observed and tributes would be held at upcoming matches.
Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, echoed the sorrow felt throughout the country: “All of Portuguese football is in mourning. Diogo was much more than a skilled player with nearly 50 international appearances — he was an extraordinary human being. His energy, kindness, and influence in his community were felt by all who knew him.”
Proenca extended condolences to both Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel and vowed to honor the legacy of both brothers.
UEFA, FIFA, and Global Football Join in Tribute
European football’s governing body, UEFA, announced that a moment of silence would be observed during all matches on Thursday and Friday at the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland, including Portugal’s fixture against Spain. FIFA has confirmed similar gestures will take place ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup quarter-finals in the United States.
A Distinguished Career Cut Tragically Short
Diogo Jota, whose full name was Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, began his senior career at Pacos de Ferreira, progressing through their youth ranks before making his debut in 2014. He impressed early and earned a move to Atletico Madrid in 2016. However, he never played for the Spanish giants, instead spending time on loan at FC Porto and then English side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Jota’s time at Wolves proved pivotal. Initially joining on loan in 2017, he was instrumental in the team’s promotion to the Premier League. The move was made permanent in 2018. Over three seasons, Jota netted 44 goals in 131 appearances for the club, helping establish them as a competitive top-flight side and earning European qualification.
In 2020, Jota transferred to Liverpool for £45 million. Under then-manager Jurgen Klopp, he quickly established himself as a key contributor, playing both as a winger and central forward. He helped Liverpool win the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his second season and reached the Champions League final.
Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool and scored 65 goals. In the 2024–25 season, under new manager Arne Slot, he added another milestone by helping the club clinch the Premier League title — the first league championship of his career. Fittingly, his shirt number, 20, aligned with Liverpool’s total number of league titles. His final goal came in a memorable Merseyside derby victory against Everton on April 2.

As an international, Jota was capped 49 times for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League in both 2019 and 2025. His final appearance for his country came just weeks ago in the Nations League final, where Portugal triumphed over Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Tributes from Clubs, Coaches, and Teammates
Wolverhampton Wanderers, where Jota first made his name in English football, expressed their grief in a statement. “He was loved by fans, teammates, and everyone at the club. Diogo will never be forgotten.”
Atletico Madrid shared in the grief, calling the news “shocking” and extending sympathies to the families and loved ones of both players.
Manchester United also paid respects, offering condolences to the Jota and Silva families, as well as to Liverpool FC.
Liverpool’s current manager Arne Slot commented on the deep sense of loss felt across the team: “This is an unbearable tragedy. Diogo was a special player, and an even more special person. We are all struggling to come to terms with this loss.”
Jurgen Klopp, the manager who brought Jota to Liverpool, shared a deeply emotional message via Instagram: “I am heartbroken. Diogo was more than just a footballer — he was a friend, a devoted husband, and a loving father. It’s difficult to find meaning in moments like this. My thoughts are with Rute, the children, and the rest of the family.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s national teammate, posted: “My condolences go to the family — to his wife and kids. May they find strength in this impossible moment. We will all miss you, Diogo and Andre.”

Remembering Andre Silva
Andre Silva, though less known internationally than his older brother, also had a career in football. He started in FC Porto’s youth ranks and later joined Pacos de Ferreira, where Diogo had previously played. He then played for the under-23 squads of Famalicão and Boavista before spending two seasons at Gondomar. He moved to Penafiel in July 2023 and had started to find his footing professionally.
A Lasting Legacy
Both Pacos de Ferreira and FC Porto released statements mourning the deaths. Porto said they were in “shock and profound regret,” while Pacos spoke of “deep sorrow” over the loss of two individuals who left a lasting mark through their humility and dedication.
“Diogo was more than a former player — he was a role model, someone whose rise from our academy to global football inspired generations,” Pacos de Ferreira said. “He represented the fighting spirit and passion of our club. He will forever be one of us.”
As the footballing world continues to mourn, the legacy of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva will be remembered not just for their accomplishments on the pitch, but for the lives they touched off it. Their stories, though cut short, will live on in the hearts of fans, teammates, and loved ones.s one of us, and even the distance never broke the connection. This was his club, he never hid that fact. His name is part of our history. It always will be. And we will do everything to keep his story, his legacy alive.”
