Knicks fire Tom Thibodeau 3 days after season ends in conference finals

knicks fire thibodeau a bold move for future success

In a move that surprised many fans and analysts alike, the New York Knicks have relieved head coach Tom Thibodeau of his duties, just three days after the team’s hard-fought run to the Eastern Conference finals came to an end. Despite the team’s most successful season in 25 years, the front office has decided to chart a new course for the future.

Knicks President Leon Rose issued an official statement announcing the decision, emphasizing that it was made with the organization’s long-term goals in mind.

“This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering an NBA championship to our fans,” Rose stated. “While it was not an easy call, we believe this move positions us best for continued growth and success. We deeply appreciate Tom’s tireless dedication and the passion he brought to the team every single day.”

Thibodeau’s dismissal is especially surprising considering the team’s recent achievements. This season, the Knicks advanced to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000, surpassing expectations and igniting hope among their loyal fanbase. Just last year, Thibodeau signed a contract extension, and he still has approximately $20 million owed to him under that deal.

Support for Thibodeau remained strong even after the team’s playoff exit. Star point guard Jalen Brunson publicly endorsed the coach, stating that Thibodeau was the right man to lead the Knicks. Similarly, guard Josh Hart shared his appreciation on social media after the news broke, writing simply: “Forever grateful.”

Over the course of his tenure, the 67-year-old Thibodeau compiled a 226-174 record during the regular season and guided New York to the playoffs in four separate campaigns. Each season under his leadership saw progress in team performance and cohesion.

Despite those accomplishments, the Knicks ultimately came up just short of reaching their first NBA Finals since 1999. Their playoff journey ended with a six-game series loss to the Indiana Pacers. According to sources close to the organization, team president Leon Rose made the final call on Thibodeau’s firing, with full support from owner James Dolan.

Throughout the season, Thibodeau faced some public criticism for his coaching style—particularly for heavily relying on his starting lineup and giving them significant playing time. These concerns resurfaced in March when guard Mikal Bridges commented on the issue during a shootaround in Portland, noting he had spoken with Thibodeau about the intense workload. However, Thibodeau later denied any such conversation had taken place.

Even so, the Knicks remained relatively healthy throughout the year and benefited from the consistent availability of their key players. Under Thibodeau’s direction, the team was known for its resilience and ability to execute in high-pressure moments, largely thanks to Brunson, who was named the league’s Clutch Player of the Year.

During the playoffs, Thibodeau demonstrated greater flexibility with his rotations, a departure from his usual rigid approach during the regular season. His strategic adjustments helped the Knicks go deeper into the postseason than they had in decades. However, despite these changes, the front office ultimately determined that new leadership was necessary to elevate the team to championship contention.

As they begin the search for a new head coach, the Knicks are aiming to find someone who can build on the foundation Thibodeau helped lay—a roster filled with promise but also lingering challenges. From January 1 through the end of the regular season, New York’s main starting five posted a negative net rating, raising concerns about the long-term viability of the current core.

In the playoffs, certain lineup issues became more evident, and although Thibodeau’s in-series changes helped to mitigate some of those problems, they weren’t enough to push the team past the Pacers and into the Finals.

The incoming head coach will inherit a roster headlined by Jalen Brunson, who has proven himself as one of the league’s premier point guards. Other key contributors under contract for the 2025 season include Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart. However, given the team’s inconsistency at times, there’s speculation that not all of these players will remain in New York unless the front office believes coaching was the root cause of their on-court issues.

The Knicks wrapped up the 2024-25 regular season with 51 wins—their highest total since the 2012-13 campaign. That success followed a pattern of consistent improvement during Thibodeau’s four-year stint. Remarkably, he became the first Knicks coach since Jeff Van Gundy to complete four seasons with the franchise. Van Gundy left the position midway through the 2001-02 season, and no coach since had managed to maintain that kind of longevity—until Thibodeau.

Prior to his time in New York, Thibodeau held head coaching positions with both the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves, where he helped lead both teams to the playoffs. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics and played a key role in their 2008 NBA Championship run.

Thibodeau’s reputation as a defensive-minded, hard-nosed coach has long been established in NBA circles. He brought structure, accountability, and toughness to a Knicks franchise that had struggled for relevance in the years before his arrival. His tenure saw the return of playoff basketball to Madison Square Garden and helped reinvigorate a fanbase hungry for success.

Still, the ultimate goal of winning an NBA title remained out of reach, and the team’s leadership now believes that a new voice is needed to take the next step.

With the offseason underway, the Knicks’ coaching search will be one of the league’s most closely watched storylines. Several high-profile candidates are expected to be considered, especially given the team’s current trajectory and talent base. Whoever steps into the role will face enormous expectations—but also an opportunity to build something special.

For Tom Thibodeau, the end of this chapter does not diminish the impact he made on the franchise. His efforts laid the groundwork for the Knicks’ return to relevance and provided a much-needed cultural shift. As the team moves forward, his contributions will not be forgotten.

As Rose concluded in his statement: “We thank Tom deeply for everything he’s done. He has been an integral part of our recent success, and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”
