Ravens’ release of Justin Tucker brings record-breaking era to embarrassing, inevitable end

At M&T Bank Stadium, Justin Tucker’s No. 9 jersey has been a prominent sight in the stands, second only to the No. 8 jersey worn by two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson. For over a decade, Tucker has set the standard as the most accurate kicker in NFL history, solidifying his reputation as a future Hall of Famer and a lock for the Ravens’ Ring of Honor.
However, after 13 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, Tucker’s tenure has come to an abrupt and unexpected end, and his career now hangs in the balance.
On Monday, the Ravens announced they were parting ways with Tucker, following allegations made by 16 massage therapists accusing him of sexually inappropriate conduct during therapy sessions. The accusations, which include claims that Tucker exposed himself and inappropriately touched the therapists, surfaced in a series of investigative reports published by The Baltimore Banner beginning in late January. Tucker has categorically denied the allegations.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta framed Tucker’s release as a purely football-related decision, a strategic move to avoid potential legal complications if the accusations were ultimately proven untrue. “Football decisions are sometimes incredibly difficult, and this was one of those moments,” DeCosta said. “Given our current roster structure, we’ve made the tough call to release Justin Tucker. He has provided our organization with countless unforgettable moments. His reliability, focus, resilience, and exceptional talent made him one of the league’s best kickers for more than a decade. We thank Justin for his numerous contributions to our team and wish him and his family the best as they move forward.”
The decision to release Tucker wasn’t solely based on the allegations. At 35, Tucker is coming off the worst season of his career and was one of the highest-paid kickers in the league. By designating his release as post-June 1, the cash-strapped Ravens are set to clear over $4 million in salary cap space in the coming month.
Signs that Tucker’s time with the team was coming to an end emerged when the Ravens selected Arizona kicker Tyler Loop in the sixth round of the NFL Draft — the first time in team history they had drafted a kicker. Loop made his debut at the team’s rookie minicamp, which started on Sunday, and the timing of Tucker’s release suggests the Ravens wanted to avoid any awkwardness by having both kickers present simultaneously.
The Ravens had previously stated that they would monitor the NFL’s investigation into the allegations against Tucker, pledging not to rush to judgment while allowing the process to play out. The allegations stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between 2012 and 2016. No criminal charges or civil suits have been filed, and Maryland’s three-year statute of limitations for civil lawsuits has expired. Nevertheless, the growing pressure on Ravens ownership, particularly on team owner Steve Bisciotti, to act decisively became difficult to ignore.

Despite the serious nature of the accusations, the news of Tucker’s release still came as a shock to many fans. Tucker wasn’t just any player — he was a franchise icon who rose to prominence despite playing a position that typically receives little fanfare.
Throughout his career, Tucker cultivated an image of integrity and family values. He has been an outspoken advocate for Catholic charities and frequently involved himself in community events alongside his wife and son. He once performed “Ave Maria” at a Christmas festival hosted at a local basilica, furthering his reputation as a man of faith. Now, that carefully crafted public image has been tarnished by allegations that paint a starkly different portrait of the NFL’s most accurate kicker.
The Ravens will now begin a season with a new kicker for the first time since 2012, when Tucker, an undrafted rookie out of the University of Texas, stepped in and immediately became one of the league’s most reliable special teams weapons. In his debut season, he made 30 of 33 field goals, including the game-winning 38-yarder in Baltimore’s 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.
Tucker’s success continued to mount as he earned the first of five All-Pro nods and seven Pro Bowl selections in 2013. During one stretch, he converted 65 consecutive fourth-quarter and overtime field goals, setting an NFL record. That streak ended when he narrowly missed a 67-yard game-winning attempt against the Jacksonville Jaguars in November 2022.
Beyond his on-field accolades, Tucker became a charismatic and well-known figure in Baltimore, defying the stereotype of the quiet, unassuming kicker. He made appearances on “60 Minutes,” entertained fans with celebrity impersonations, and even won a national NFL talent show in 2018 with his opera singing skills. His popularity extended beyond the stadium, as he became a sought-after pitchman for local businesses like Royal Farms, a convenience store chain headquartered in Baltimore.

Despite Tucker’s undeniable talent and fan-friendly persona, the last few months have been challenging. His struggles during the 2024 season saw him miss eight field goals and two extra points, a significant decline for a player long considered automatic. With the Ravens losing close games in which Tucker’s missed kicks played a pivotal role, some fans began calling for the team to move on from the veteran kicker.
Nevertheless, Tucker responded by making all five field goal attempts and converting all 23 extra-point tries in the final six games of the season. During the Ravens’ end-of-season press conference, DeCosta and head coach John Harbaugh publicly expressed their confidence in Tucker, indicating that they expected him to remain the team’s kicker in 2025.
That all changed with the release of the investigative reports, which cast a shadow over Tucker’s future in the league. He was no longer just a veteran kicker on the decline; he was now a player facing serious allegations that threatened not only his career but also his reputation.
With Tucker’s departure, the Ravens find themselves in uncharted territory. A decade-long era of stability and excellence at the kicking position has come to a close, and the franchise must now entrust their special teams to a rookie. Meanwhile, Tucker’s once-unblemished legacy has been irrevocably altered by the allegations, leaving his future in professional football uncertain.
