CES: A Window into Technological Development

CES, organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), was first held in New York in 1967, with 117 exhibitors and around 17,500 attendees. Over time, it has become a key event for tech enthusiasts to observe future trends.

Today, CES attracts more than 180,000 professional buyers and industry professionals annually, with exhibition space covering a vast 2.6 million square feet (approximately 241,500 square meters).

Past CES events have introduced major inventions such as cassette tapes, vacuum tube color televisions, wireless telephones, and flip phones, which, although commonplace today, were once revolutionary and iconic. While technologies like 4K TVs and touch-screen phones may seem mundane by today’s standards, they once made an enormous impact.

In recent years, CES not only showcases new hardware products but also highlights software innovations and solutions.

AI at the Core: New Generation Graphics Cards, Humanoid Robots, and Self-Driving Cars Take the Spotlight

The 2024 CES focused on generative AI applications, and the 2025 event will continue to center on AI. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will deliver a keynote speech on January 7, Taiwan time, to showcase how creativity, technology, and innovation will impact businesses and society, bringing about transformation.

It is rumored that Huang will announce the next-generation RTX 50 series graphics cards at CES and present the latest views on humanoid robots, self-driving cars, and other cutting-edge technologies.

The number of entries for the CES 2025 Innovation Awards is expected to reach a new high, with 33 categories, and AI has become the fastest-growing category, with a 49.5% increase in submissions compared to last year.

According to Forbes, the highlights of CES 2025 to watch out for include agentic AI, automotive innovations, upgrades in computing power, advancements in display technologies, as well as developments in health tech, wearables, and extended reality (XR).

CES: A 50-Year History of the Rise and Fall of the Electronics Industry

Since its inception, CES has been considered a barometer of the global consumer electronics industry. However, after Microsoft, which had previously been a regular speaker at the opening sessions, withdrew from CES following its 2012 appearance, and with persistent issues like overemphasis on hardware, many major companies reduced their participation. In 2013, the personal computer (PC) sector saw a decline, and the focus of CES shifted toward mobile communication companies like Qualcomm and Samsung. It wasn’t until 2014, when Microsoft returned to CES, that the event regained much of its former attention.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, CES was one of the few physical events still held, though major companies like Google and Meta announced they would not participate due to the pandemic. In 2022, the organizers had to announce an early closure of CES due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

According to a post-event report from the Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC), following their participation in CES 2024, AI-powered personal computers (AI PCs) are expected to surpass traditional PCs and become crucial partners in personal development. Additionally, generative AI is making vehicle cabin applications more intuitive and everyday, bringing innovations to electric vehicle development. Another trend observed at CES 2024 is the rise of “home” as a new starting point for digital health, with many wearables, IoT devices, and home environment integration being showcased.

Taiwan: The Global AI Hub

CES 2025 is expected to feature over 4,000 exhibitors from around 150 countries, with major international companies like NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD sending high-level representatives. Taiwanese companies such as Foxconn, Gigabyte, MSI, Solomon, AUO, ASRock, Wistron, Elitegroup, and Aaeon will showcase their latest technologies and solutions. Although some manufacturers like Wistron, Quanta, Inventec, and Compal may not have official booths due to limited consumer product offerings, it is reported that they will still send senior executives to the event. Inventec, led by Chairman Ye Licheng and General Manager Cai Zhi’an, will visit CES to meet customers, while Compal’s CEO Bernardo Ro will also attend the event in person to expand their smart vehicle and AI solutions business.

Gigabyte, led by Group CEO Lee Yitai, will showcase cutting-edge computing power at CES under the theme “The Era of Accelerated Computing.” Key highlights include AI servers powered by AMD Instinct MI300 series, Intel Gaudi 3 accelerators, and the latest NVIDIA HGX superchips.machine interaction, ecosystems, and user experience, focusing on practicality, entertainment, and interactivity within smart cockpits.
