A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting early Sunday morning on the Tuskegee University campus in Alabama, which resulted in one fatality and left twelve others injured during the school’s homecoming celebrations, authorities reported.
The suspect, Jaquez Myrick from Montgomery, was detained on Sunday and charged under federal law for possessing a machine gun, according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Facebook.
Police officers apprehended Mr. Myrick while he was leaving the shooting scene, allegedly carrying a handgun outfitted with a machine gun conversion device, the agency noted. The exact cause of the incident, which occurred around 1:40 a.m. on campus, remains unknown.
The victim who lost his life was identified as 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson from Troy, Alabama, according to Hal Bentley, the Macon County coroner. Tuskegee University confirmed that Mr. Johnson was not enrolled as a student there.
“The victim’s parents have been notified,” the university said, adding that several others, including university students, sustained injuries.
According to authorities, twelve individuals were taken to hospitals for treatment following the shooting. Their conditions were not immediately available on Sunday, though at least one person was reported to be in critical condition by The Associated Press on Monday. Four additional people sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting occurred as large crowds gathered at the historically Black liberal arts institution, home to 3,000 students, to mark the conclusion of its 100th homecoming week, which began on November 3.
In a social media video, a woman’s voice can be heard urgently yelling, “Get down! Get down!” as she and others sought cover behind a car during the gunfire.
Following the tragedy, La’Tavion Johnson’s father, Larry Johnson, expressed on Facebook, “We need to put the guns down.” His mother, Tamika Johnson, shared a photo of her son in his graduation cap and gown.
On Monday, Mr. Myrick remained in custody at the Montgomery County jail, according to records. It is unclear if he has obtained legal representation.
Authorities have not disclosed whether they suspect additional individuals were involved in the shooting, but they encourage anyone with relevant videos or information to contact the FBI.
Tuskegee University, located in the city of Tuskegee with approximately 8,700 residents and situated 40 miles east of Montgomery, held several homecoming events, including a parade, concerts, and a football game against Miles College on Saturday.
Miles College released a statement on Sunday, saying, “We extend our deepest condolences to those affected and pray for healing and justice. Miles College stands with you in this difficult time.”
Tuskegee University announced the cancellation of classes for Monday in response to the incident.
