A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on the Tuskegee University campus in Alabama, which resulted in one fatality and left twelve others injured during a gathering for the university’s homecoming festivities, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified as Jaquez Myrick, 25, from Montgomery, was apprehended on Sunday. He faces federal charges for possession of a machine gun, as confirmed by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency in a Facebook post.
Authorities reported that Mr. Myrick was found leaving the scene carrying a handgun fitted with a machine gun conversion device. The motive behind the 1:40 a.m. shooting on campus remains unclear.
The identity of the 18-year-old victim, who was not affiliated with the university, has not been disclosed. Tuskegee University stated that the victim’s family has been notified. “Several others, including Tuskegee University students, were injured,” the statement continued.
A total of twelve individuals sustained injuries from the incident and were taken to nearby hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately available. Additionally, four other people were injured.
The shooting occurred amid large gatherings celebrating the university’s 100th homecoming week, which started on November 3. Tuskegee University, a historically Black liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,000 students, hosted various events including a parade, concerts, and a football game against Miles College on Saturday.
A video shared on social media captured a young woman shouting, “Get down! Get down!” as she and others crouched behind a car amidst the gunfire.
Located in Tuskegee, a city with approximately 8,700 residents and situated around 40 miles east of Montgomery, the university canceled Monday’s classes in light of the incident.
Expressing support, Miles College issued a statement on Sunday saying, “We extend our deepest condolences to those impacted and pray for healing and justice. Miles College stands with you in this difficult time.”
