Major League Baseball has announced the ban of two New York Yankees fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts by grabbing his glove, opening it, and dislodging a baseball during Game 5 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, according to a spokesperson from the league.

Austin Capobianco, 38, from Connecticut, was removed from the game after the incident occurred in the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 victory in Game 4 on Tuesday night. Another fan, identified by ESPN as John Peter, was also ejected alongside Capobianco.

The Yankees released a statement addressing the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

“Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for unacceptable and aggressive physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts,” the statement read. “The safety and security of players, fans, and stadium staff are our top priorities during every event at Yankee Stadium, and this cannot be compromised.

“Tonight is our final home game of the season, and we want our fans’ passion to shine through. Yankee Stadium is famous for its vibrant energy; however, supporting one’s team should never cross the line into endangering players physically. The Yankees and Major League Baseball uphold a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding the behavior displayed last night. These fans are prohibited from attending tonight’s game in any capacity.”

The Major League Baseball Players Association contacted MLB directly, urging the league to ban the two fans for Game 5, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

“The MLBPA prioritizes player safety and security, particularly within the ballpark,” stated MLBPA executive director Tony Clark. “Following any incident affecting players, we have maintained communication with league security officials since last night and will monitor both the response to this situation and the protective measures implemented moving forward, starting tonight.”

Darren Capobianco mentioned that his brother, Austin, is a season ticket holder for the Yankees. A team spokesperson noted that no decisions have been made regarding any potential actions related to their future ticketing. Austin Capobianco did not reply to text messages from The Athletic seeking his comments on Wednesday morning.

After the play, Capobianco attempted to argue with stadium security, claiming that Betts’ glove had extended into foul territory.

In the bottom of the first inning, with the Yankees trailing 2-0, leadoff hitter Gleyber Torres popped a high fly ball into foul territory in right field. When Betts caught the ball with his glove above the padded wall, Capobianco grabbed the glove with both hands, opened it, and reached inside, knocking the ball back onto the field. The umpires ruled it as fan interference, resulting in Torres being called out.

When asked if he had ever seen fans behave so aggressively, Betts replied, “It doesn’t matter. We lost; it’s irrelevant. I’m fine, he’s fine, everything’s cool. We lost the game, and that’s what I’m focused on—turning the page. Everything’s fine.”
